Associate Curator of Contemporary Art Irene Shum discusses the eighteen-foot-long ink drawing, Written Minneapolis (The Last Tomb), 2014 by Iranian-American artist Siah Armajani (b. 1939). A recent gift to the Menil Collection from the Lannan Foundation, Written Minneapolis was included in the artist’s retrospective, Siah Armajani: Follow this Line, co-organized by the Walker Art Center and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (2018-2019). Offering a sweeping view of an urban American landscape and distinguished by the artist’s use of Farsi text as surface texture, the work is an homage to both Armajani’s hometown of Tehran and his adopted city of Minneapolis.
