Join Conservator of Works of Art on Paper Jan Burandt in the Janie C. Lee Drawing Study Room, to explore the drawings of Charles August Albert Dellschau (1830-1923), a Prussian immigrant who settled in Houston in the late 19th century. Dellschau created elaborate double-sided drawings, which he bound eccentrically into unique scrapbooks. Dellschau’s fantastical collages include dated newspaper clippings of aeronautical adventure and intricately drawn aero machines of imagination. The drawings may be numbered, dated, and often inscribed with letters of a secret language. These scrapbooks and the individual drawings they contain hold great value for those who cherish visionary art or speculate on UFOs.
Held on Fridays for a small group, Member Noontime Talks make exhibitions more intimate and reveal the collection as never before. To sign up, please RSVP to membership@menil.org.
