Artist Talk: Robert Gober, Reflections on “The Meat Wagon”

Artist Robert Gober takes us on a reflective journey back to his exhibition, The Meat Wagon, on view at the Menil 2005-06. The title references an excerpt from John de Menil’s last will, which states “These details are not inspired by pride, which would be rather vain, because I’ll be a corpse for the meat wagon. I just want to show that faith can be alive.”
The Meat Wagon, curated by Matthew Drutt in collaboration with Gober, included twenty works by the artist installed alongside forty pieces from the museum’s collection. Gober selected pieces over years of research and exploration.
Celebrated for his thought-provoking and often enigmatic art, Gober will speak about the inspiration, creative process, and profound themes surrounding this important exhibition, including the afterlife of historical surrealism, spirituality, race, and the everyday object.
