Menil Society members are invited to a special preview of the two concurrent Menil Drawing Institute exhibitions, Fragments of Memory and Out of Thin Air: Emerging Forms. Curators Kelly Montana and Kirsten Marples will lead tours of the exhibitions, and Menil Society Members will enjoy passed hors d'oeuvres, live music, complimentary refreshments, and mingling with Menil staff.
Fragments of Memory, a selection of works from the Menil’s permanent collection, explores the ways in which the past imbues the present. In their drawings, the featured artists take up commonplace embodiments of personal and collective memory, such as scrapbooks, snapshots, notes, relics, and odes, to reimagine how we might access fraught memories and contested histories.
Selected from the Menil’s permanent collection, Out of Thin Air: Emerging Forms displays artworks dating from the late 1930s to the present and is united by a visual concept: emerging forms. Not fully resolved or strictly defined, the works in this exhibition are open, suggestive images that seem as though they are still in the process of becoming.
